Facetime is advertised as the ultimate video conference app for Apple devices, no matter if it’s OS X or iOS. It’s simple and ubiquitous throughout iWorld, but still there are reasons it can’t be your only video phone.
Time to Show Your Face
Making calls with FaceTime on computer is as easy as can be. To start a call, you just tap “+” and start entering the name or the number, and then select the right one out of suggestions. The call starts immediately; you can turn your camera on and off right as you talk. While you’re talking, using an app installed on computer FaceTime there’s nothing on the screen but video from your companion. But it takes just a tap to open augmented reality menus. So you can add various stickers that follow the movement of your head and move along with it. You can add animal faces, emoji, various stickers that create the atmosphere, or just plain text.
Calls are logged in your call history, so you just need to find it in your phone app to call someone you talk to frequently. As current versions of iOS offer pre installed FaceTime app, you may need to download FaceTime app only if you have deleted it for some reason. So, if your friends switched to iPhones from their Android devices since you removed this app, you have a good reason to get it back.
Security Breaches and Other Issues
Any FaceTime video calling review written in 2019 should consider the fact that it had a serious security breach only fixed in iOS 12.1.4 (released February 9th, 2019). Though now it’s reported to be secure, still keep in mind that such incidents are possible, and you better select other tools for important group conferences (until the fix proves to be okay).
The more important thing is, in fact, rather a feature than a bug, but still it may cause some inconvenience. FaceTime video chat is only available for Apple devices, so if you need to talk to someone using Android or Windows, you’ll have to opt for another service, like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or good old Skype.
